Mbalula releases World Cup report
Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula says South Africa staged an excellent tournament.
JOHANNESBURG - Sport Minister Fikile Mbalula on Thursday released government's report on the 2010 Fifa World Cup.
The minister said the report was proof that South Africa defied all odds and staged the best ever Fifa World Cup tournament.
The report stated that government committed around R30 billion to build and upgrade major infrastructure for the event.
Facilities such as stadiums, transport systems, and health and safety facilities were upgraded ahead of the tournament.
Mbalula said the showpiece earned South Africa a reputation of being a country that could deliver major events.
"South Africa achieved what it was supposed to do."
He said tournament was great exposure for the country.
The report said revenue generated by tourists during the World Cup exceeded R3 billion.
