CAPE TOWN - Former Springbok captain John Smit has officially been announced as the new CEO of the Sharks.

The Sharks have managed to negotiate Smit's release from London club Saracens.

Smit will take over the reins from veteran administrator Brian van Zyl from 1 July.

Smit says it's a massive opportunity and challenge for him.

"It's a hell of a challenging job. I think the challenge for me is taking over from probably one of South Africa's best administrators in the game. He's got massive boots to fill but it's a great brand and I really believe in it.

Van Zyl has held the position for the past 20 years. He will mentor Smit until his pre-agreed retirement date in 2014.
