JOHANNESBURG - It has emerged that four children have been killed in a shack fire at the Dukathole Informal Settlement on the East Rand.

Emergency services initially reported three boys aged between three and 13 died in the blaze during the early hours of Tuesday.

The latest victim is a 4-year-old child.

Emergency services said the body of the fourth child was found in what was left of the shack.

The bodies of the other three were found earlier.

It is understood the fire was caused by a candle and a paraffin stove which was kept on throughout the night.

The children lived with their two mothers and grandmother.

Both women survived the blaze but are being treated for smoke inhalation and trauma.

Residents, who tried to put out the flames before firefighters arrived at 3am, are also helping clear up the scene.
