Officer gets 18 years for rape
A former Free State police officer has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for rape and abduction.
JOHANNESBURG - The Sasolburg Regional Court on Monday sentenced a former police officer to 18 years in prison for rape and abduction.
Mahlatse Thobakgale (37) and a former senior superintendent in the Free State commissioner's office were found guilty of abducting a woman from the Deneysville police station three years ago.
He forced his victim into his car at gunpoint and drove her to an isolated spot where he repeatedly raped her.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) spokesperson Moses Dlamini said the harsh sentence should send a message to police involved in crime.
"Police [officers who commit crimes] will face the full might of the law."
