Jansen explains his Madiba comments
Free State University's Jonathan Jansen says his comments were taken out of context.
JOHANNESBURG - University of the Free State Vice Chancellor Jonathan Jansen on Monday said the comments he made about Nelson Mandela have been taken out of context.
Jansen was addressing students on Sunday when he remarked he wished the former statesman would die.
Mandela was discharged from hospital on Saturday after he was treated for a recurring lung infection.
Jansen said his comments were misconstrued.
"Journalists were of course naughty and took two or three words out of what I said and made it sound very cruel and brutal. Like all South Africans I would love for Madiba to live for another 100 years, but that's not going to happen for him and it's not going to happen for us."
"Nelson Mandela has done so much for this country and I just wish he could die in peace, wouldn't you wish that too?."
