Guptas to sue Sunday Times - report
Reports suggest the Gupta family is suing the 'Sunday Times' for R500 million for defamation.
JOHANNESBURG - Businessman Atul Gupta has reportedly set in motion a court action to claim defamation damages of R500 million from the Sunday Times.
In March, the newspaper reported the Guptas tried to bribe a senior official at South African Airways (SAA) on two different occasions, first with R100,000 and then R500,000.
Bizcommunity said the report was headlined "Guptas try to 'buy' SAA boss."
According to a summons filed in the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria, the family believes the article is "wrongful" and "defamatory".
They also dispute that "they would summon cabinet ministers and senior government officials to their home, allegedly to conduct further unlawful and inappropriate business dealings."
The family also denies being "shady" and "corrupt".
Gupta is the managing director of Sahara holdings and executive chairman of TNA Holdings, owners of the New Age newspaper.
