NDP needs competent officials - Manuel
The minister said a competent and committed public service is vital if the NDP is to succeed.
PRETORIA - A competent and committed public service is vital in implementing the National Development Plan (NDP), Minister in the Presidency Trevor Manuel said on Wednesday.
He was speaking at the first Government Leaders Summit in Pretoria.
The gathering provides a platform for national, provincial and local government bosses to discuss problems and develop solutions to improve service delivery.
Manuel described the public service as a machine, with many fine-tuned parts that need to work together harmoniously to be efficient.
"If we don't repair the engine room, then we won't be able to involve all South Africans in the implementation of the plan."
He said government wants officials with professional qualities.
"[We want officials that are] professional, competent, dedicated, innovative and committed."
Manuel said ideally, public servants should stay in their positions for longer because regular changes contribute to instability.
