JOHANNESBURG - More than 485 drunk drivers were arrested at road blocks at key points across the country last weekend.

Provincial traffic authorities were certain they would reduce the number of road fatalities this Easter holiday.

The death toll over the Easter period has seen a decline in recent years, from 300 fatalities in 2011 to 171 in 2012.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation's spokesperson Ashref Ismail said they were satisfied with their progress in curbing road accidents.

But he said the RTMC could not release provisional numbers for this year yet.

"A major crash is defined by one in which five or more people die on a single accident."
