IPID probe Mamelodi shoot-out
The IPID are investigating the death of a Mamelodi man who died from a stray bullet.
MAMELODI - The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) today took over the investigation into a shoot-out between officers and hijackers in Mamelodi that accidentally killed the founder of a drug rehabilitation centre.
Last week Wednesday Skhumbuzo Jele died after he was shot while police were chasing suspects through Mamelodi west.
Jele was the founder of Second Chance Recovery, a centre that helped young drug abusers to beat their addiction.
His life ended after a stray bullet hit him while police were in pursuit of a group of hijackers.
He died from his injuries at the scene.
Police said it was still unclear whether the fatal bullet was fired by the hijackers or the officers.
IPID will not be conducting its own investigation.
Jele's mother, Penelope, says his death is a loss to the Mamelodi community.
