JOHANNESBURG - The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) will not confirm or deny reports on Sunday that its troops shot dead child soldiers when they came under fire in the Central African Republic last week.

Sunday newspapers have quoted some of the soldiers, who were part of the group that battled Seleka rebels in Bangui, which left 13 of their colleagues’ dead, saying some of the rebels were merely teenagers.

“Anybody who happens to be carrying a weapon and points that weapon towards the South African National Defence Force member,” said the Defence Force's Xolani Mabanga.

“The South African National Defence Force member has a righto defend himself or herself.”
