'Pistorius needs to qualify'

The ASA claims that Oscar Pistorius needs to qualify to compete in the team going to Moscow.

JOHANNESBURG - While some of the travel restrictions that formed part of Oscar Pistorius's bail conditions were lifted this week, it appears his hopes of again competing in international athletics have been somewhat dashed.

Pistorius is accused of murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine's Day.

The North Gauteng High Court this week amended his bail conditions, giving him permission to travel.

The International Athletics Federation has however told The Sunday Times that Pistorius's possible participation in the World Championships in Moscow in August will depend on whether Athletics South Africa (ASA) select him as part of the team.

Spokesperson of the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) Nick Davies is quoted as saying he believes this was extremely unlikely.

The ASA, meanwhile, has admitted it is in quite a bind, claiming that if Pistorius qualifies, it would be difficult not to select him.
