JOHANNESBURG - The Transport Department on Thursday warned it is conducting several operations to deal with the increased traffic volumes during the Easter weekend.

Deputy Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga has been speaking to taxi operators, drivers and passengers who are going on long-distance trips over the weekend.

The department's Tiyani Rikhotso said, "Our message is not different from the message that we have been issuing throughout the 2012 festive season."

He called on motorists to exercise caution on the roads.

WESTERN CAPE

The Western Cape traffic department says the province's roads are already extremely busy.

Provincial traffic chief Kenny Africa said they are ready for the influx of cars and will do everything in their power to avoid accidents.

Two people were arrested for speeding on the N1 in Beaufort West.

Africa says motorist should be extra cautious when it rains.

"The weather is not good especially on the N1 outside Beaufort West, the road is slippery. We urge motorists to take care."
