Bongani Moyo (L) and his co-accused Khubulani Sibanda and Leon Ngcube after their prison break failed on 14 March 2012.

PRETORIA - Serial escapee and bank robber Bongani Moyo was sentenced to 62 years in prison by the North Gauteng High Court on Monday.

His accomplice Khumbulani Sibanda was sentenced to 55 years behind bars.

Earlier in the case, the men pleaded guilty to a range of crimes, including armed robbery and the illegal possession of firearms.

Their plea for leniency was rejected by the Pretoria court.

Judge Natvarlal Ranchod said Moyo and Sibanda pleaded guilty to six robbery charges because of the strength of the state's case against them.

He added the men were not sorry for what they had done.

According to the judge, the court had a duty to protect society from dangerous criminals.

Both men will appeal their lengthy sentences.
