New CPT mausoleum opened

The City of Cape Town has opened a mausoleum in Maitland to help with a current burial space problem.

The City of Cape Town has opened a mausoleum in Maitland to help with a current burial space problem.

CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town says mausoleums are ideal burial options for the city with its high water table and limited land.

The Maitland Mausoleum at the Maitland Cemetery will be officially opened on Monday.

The above-ground burial crypt accommodates a body and a coffin with crypts stacked vertically.

The city's Antonio van der Rheede says the Maitland mausoleum was a pilot project they embarked on due to the problems with in-ground burial.

"The mausoleum is a very environmentally friendly way of dealing with burial."

Van der Rheede also says the crypts are easily identifiable and can be re-used.

He says that space for burials is running out.
