Officer killed during street vendor eviction
The police were evicting several street vendors in Daveyton on Sunday morning.
JOHANNESBURG - An Ekurhuleni Metro Police Officer was on Sunday reportedly killed following an alleged scuffle with a street vendor in Daveyton, east of Johannesburg.
The police were evicting several street vendors on Sunday morning and an altercation followed.
The 48-year-old officer was with the bylaw enforcement team when he was allegedly punched by the vendor who refused to let the police take his caravan away.
The metro police's Vusi Mabanga said the man, who has since been arrested, became violent when officers came to remove his caravan.
He said the man punched the officer under the chin and the policeman lost consciousness.
"We tried to resuscitate the officer but unfortunately after an hour he was certified dead," said Mabanga.
The police's Tryna Maritz said the man will face a charge of murder.
"A gentleman in a blue Volkswagen came. He blocked the caravan.
"He jumped out. He actually assaulted a metro officer.
"The metro officer fell down to the floor. He was unconscious.
"The paramedics were called to the scene.
"The metro officer died on the scene."
The scene of the incident has drawn residents to the streets wanting to get a peek at what happened.
The policeman's body has was subsequently loaded into a mortuary van.
