22 killed in N1 bus crash
At least 22 people have died in a bus accident on the N1 in the Western Cape.
CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Health authorities say the death toll in the bus accident on the Hex River Pass near De Doorns has risen to 22.
Traffic officials initially reported that 10 people lost their lives in this morning's accident.
It is understood the driver of the bus, en-route to Cape Town from Johannesburg, lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn.
About 60 people were on board.
The Health Department's Faiza Steyn gives a breakdown on the number of injured passengers.
"We have 15 fatalities, 12 red cases, 14 yellow cases and 20 minor cases."
A section of the N1 Highway in the Hex River Pass has been cordoned off with yellow and blue police tape as the wreck of the bus stands alongside the road.
A crane is being used to move the bus so that emergency personnel can get to those trapped inside.
Crime experts are combing the accident scene while shocked motorists, who stopped to help, look on.
Western Cape police officials have been unable to confirm the exact death toll at this stage.
They say there are still many more passengers trapped underneath the bus.
Several passengers have been transported to hospital.
