Drug traffickers frequent the N1
WC traffic officials say the N1 highway is commonly used by drug smugglers.
CAPE TOWN - Western Cape traffic authorities said on Monday the N1 remains a major drug smuggling route.
Western Cape Traffic Chief Kenny Africa said since late February there have been at least three drug busts on the highway.
In the early hours of Monday morning two men were arrested near Beaufort West after authorities discovered 15 bags of dagga with a street value of more than R80,000 in their possession.
Africa said authorities launched an operation targeting drug traffickers using the province's main roads.
"On 28 February we arrested a passenger in a taxi with 400 mandrax tablets. Last week we arrested five Nigerian nationals who were in the possession of 18 bundles of the khat drug."
