Magistrates set to strike

Magistrates across the country have rejected a five percent pay hike.

JOHANNESBURG - The Department of Justice on Monday said it is facilitating discussions between magistrates and the Independent Remuneration Commission to try and prevent a nationwide strike.

Courts across the country are facing a total shutdown after magistrates rejected a five percent salary hike.

They plan to go on strike from March 18 should their salary demands not be met.

Department spokesperson Mthunzi Mhaga said they wanted the matter to be resolved before then.

"There needs to be a resolution because [the strike] will have an impact because magistrates play a central and critical role in the administration of justice."
