Madiba spends night in hospital
Nelson Mandela underwent a scheduled medical checkup at a Pretoria healthcare facility.
PRETORIA - Former President Nelson Mandela has been admitted to hospital to allow doctors to treat conditions associated with his advanced age.
Presidential spokesperson Mac Maharaj said the 94-year-old statesman was taken to a Pretoria healthcare facility on Saturday and spent the night there.
Maharaj said Mandela's admittance is consistent with a man his age.
"He [Mandela] was admitted to hospital for a scheduled medical checkup to assist doctors with his existing medical conditions."
He urged the public to respect the family's privacy.
"We appeal for privacy so doctors can attend to the patient."
The former statesman spent two weeks in hospital in December while being treated for a recurring lung infection.
He also underwent a procedure to remove gallstones.
