JOHANNESBURG - A driver whose taxi hit and killed a seven-year-old boy is due to appear in a Randburg court on Tuesday.

It is understood a group of children were playing on the side of Witkoppen and River Bend Road on Monday, when the child ran in front of the vehicle.

Police spokesperson Balan Muthan said the driver was on the scene and was arrested for culpable homicide.

Meanwhile, Minister Lulu Xingwana has sent her condolences to the child's family.

The spokesperson for the Minister Women, Children and People with Disabilities - Cornelius Monama - said the ministry is confident justice will take its course.

"We are confident that the law enforcement agencies of our land [will] ensure that justice prevails in this matter."

Xingwana's spokesperson said the minister was "saddened" by the death and said no parent should ever have to bury their child.
