Gauteng health suppliers paid-up - Papo
Gauteng Health MEC Hope Papo says his department has paid most suppliers it owed money to.
JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng Health MEC Hope Papo on Sunday said his department had paid 99 percent of its suppliers after years of backlogs which left many business people frustrated.
Papo also said the department will ensure hospitals are properly refurbished so that there are no repeats of incidents where patients are not helped due to failing equipment.
The MEC said his department in 2013 will turn the province's health system around to make it efficient.
"With the year ahead, all facilities must plan their overtime and it must be included in the budget."
He said the construction of a medical supply depot will start this year and once finished will minimise the shortage of medicines in hospitals.
The MEC also said another part of his strategy is cost management and his focus in the coming months will be to establish a system that sees wasteful expenditure being eliminated from the system.
Gauteng health has been repeatedly slammed for its poor facilities which have put patients' lives at risk.
They have also been accused of not paying doctors for overtime worked.
