JOHANNESBURG - The Ekurhuleni Municipality on Saturday denied that water in some parts of the East Rand is contaminated.

A message sent to Blackberry phones, that has gone viral, claims the water could harm residents.

It reads that a harmful bacterial virus has been found in water supplied to the Boksburg and Brakpan areas, and that several people have already been infected.

The message then encourages people to not drink the water.

But municipal spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said there was nothing wrong with the water and called on people to stop forwarding the message he says contains false information.

"Our water in Ekurhuleni is not contaminated; what is contaminated is the untrue BBM that has been doing the rounds.

"We've got the best water in the country. We are the municipality with the [Platinum] Blue Drop Award in South Africa."
