ANC MPs under observation
Tardy MPs who voluntarily skip parliamentary sittings will be severely dealt with says ANC chief whip.
JOHANNESBURG - African National Congress (ANC) Members of Parliament (MPs) who fail to attend parliament sittings may face losing their seats if a plan to keep a record of their behaviour is adopted.
In terms of the proposal, the names of those absent without leave, neglect their constituencies or fail to attend portfolio meetings will be recorded.
ANC Chief Whip Mathole Motshekga said repeat offenders will not be included in the party's list of candidates for the National Assembly after next year's elections.
Motshekga's spokesperson Moloto Mothapo said MPs would need written permission from the chief whip to absent from parliament.
"The approach of the situation has not yielded the desired fruit and better measures are needed to be able to tackle this challenge."
