JOHANNESBURG - Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies has until the end of July to publish a notice that every municipality must comply with the Consumer Protection Act.

The North Gauteng High Court ruled on Thursday that low and medium capacity municipalities will no longer be exempt from the Act.

Civil rights group Afriforum's Kallie Kriel, who took the matter to court, said the ruling will empower residents to hold municipalities accountable.

"If you don't get the services, you can ask for your money back. Municipalities don't give us the services that we should be getting and we should act against them accordingly."
