JOHANNESBURG - The Private Rhino Owners Association said on Saturday there have been more proactive arrests of rhino poachers.

This follows the arrest of two suspected poachers at a private game reserve in Limpopo on Wednesday.

The pair, who were found in possession of a hunting rifle, an axe and knives, appeared in the Belala Regional Court on Friday.

The association's Pelham Jones attributed the arrests to increased security at most game farms.

"Private reserves are far more alert and equipped to handle the problems of rhino poaching than they were two years ago. Any arrest is welcome."

The police's Hangwani Mulaudzi agreed.

"There was a shootout between us and the rhino poachers. We managed to apprehend two of them and discovered two rifles and an AK 47 in their possession."

The suspects are expected to appear in court again on Tuesday.
