PRETORIA - South Africans will soon find out how much more they'll be paying for electricity.

The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) will announce on Thursday its decision on Eskom's tariff hike proposal.

Eskom wants a 16 percent tariff hike over the next five years.

If Nersa gives the proposed 16 percent tariff hike the green light, it will more than double the price of electricity over the next few years.

The decision follows public hearings around the country where most participants objected to the hike.

From economic experts to pensioners, small business owners and community lobby groups the message was clear, South Africans cannot afford a steep electricity hike.

The Local Government Association warned the hike would push municipalities to the tipping point and could fuel social unrest while Business Unity South Africa (BUSA) warned it would stifle job creation.

The announcement is scheduled for 1pm.
