MEC in court for conspiracy to kill
NW MEC China Dodovu is scheduled to appear in court for his bail application today.
JOHANNESBURG - North West Local Government MEC China Dodovu is scheduled to appear in court for his bail application on Wednesday.
He was arrested during an ANC provincial executive committee meeting on Monday, in connection with the murder of ANC regional secretary Obuti Chika.
Dodovu faces charges of conspiracy to commit murder.
Chika was shot in the driveway of his Klerksdorp home during the ANC's national conference in Mangaung last year December.
He was serving as the regional secretary of the Dr Kenneth Kaunda district at the time.
Others accused for the murder include North West provincial ANC Youth League chairman Papiki Baboile, ward secretary Paul Molomonyane and municipal worker William Malefo.
They face charges of murder, premeditated murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
Shortly after Dodovu's arrest, North West Premier Thandi Modise issued a statement calling for calm and urged residents to allow justice to take its course.
While ANC spokesperson Jackson Mthembu said in-party violence must urgently be stopped.
"As ANC we would like to bring a stop to all these murders that seem to be political, that seem to be assassinations."
He added, "Working with the South African police, the ANC would like to bring this to an end."
