JOHANNESBURG - Academic and activist Mamphela Ramphele on Tuesday brushed aside claims that her new political party, Agang, was being funded by foreigners.

On Monday, she launched a political platform at Johannesburg's Constitution Hill to contest the 2014 general elections.

The announcement drew mixed reaction from opposition parties, trade unions and the ruling ANC.

Ramphele on Tuesday spoke out against the ANC's claim that her party was being funded by foreigners.

She assured the country that the money used came from South Africa.

The ruling party said it will meet Ramphele where it matters most - in the hearts and minds of the people.

The politician hinted that social media will play a role in fundraising, which will happen in due course.

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) said it saw no future for the new party, while some analysts said Agang's launch was the "real state of the nation address".
