Amplats miners hold mass meeting
Amplats miners in the North West are expected to return to work on Wednesday.
RUSTENBURG - A mass meeting held by miners at Anglo American Platinum (Amplats)' Rustenburg mine on Monday ended with workers agreeing to return to their posts.
Workers are expected to return to their posts on Wednesday.
On Monday, operations at Amplats' North West operation came to a standstill following violence at the Number 1 Siphumelele mine shaft.
Thirteen people were injured in the incident.
Four shop stewards from the National Union of Mineworkers (Num) were attacked by a group of about 1,000 people.
Mine security and police then opened fire with rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.
Amplats Worker Committee representative Evans Ramokga on Monday said miners downed tools because they believed Num members were behind Monday's incident.
"We called them to explain exactly what happened so that they can return to work."
