Five people shot at Amplats
Police are trying to verify the cause of the shooting that left five people injured at Amplats.
RUSTENBURG - At least five people have been shot at the Number 1 Siphumelele shaft at Anglo American Platinum (Amplats)'s mine in Rustenburg on Monday.
It is understood clashes broke out between members of the National Union of Mineworkers (Num) and rival union the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu).
This after officials tried to occupy offices at the shaft.
Mine security then intervened.
Police spokesperson Thulane Ngubane said several people were transported to hospital.
"People are reported to be injured and some have been sent to hospital. We are not able to verify the number of injuries and the cause of the violence."
According to a miner, Num shop stewards were attacked at the entrance of the shaft by other miners who had just clocked off.
In 2012, a similar incident left two miners dead at Harmony Gold's Kusasalethu mine near Carletonville on Gauteng's West Rand.
