Lightning victim dies in hospital

SOWETO - The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) on Friday sent its condolences to the family of one of the girls who was struck by lightning in Protea Glen, Soweto.

The 16-year-old girl was struck by lightning on Monday afternoon.

Bertha Ncube was walking home with three friends at the time of the incident.

Ncube had been in a critical condition in hospital.

She died at Chris Hani Baragwaneth Hospital on Friday afternoon.

GDE spokesperson Charles Phahlane said, "The family has not made any funeral arrangements as yet."

Meanwhile, two of the nine boys from King Edward VII School (KES) who were struck by lightning on Tuesday are still receiving treatment at Johannesburg's Milpark Hospital.

One of the boys is in a critical but stable condition.

The other pupil has been moved from ICU.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Mandy Toubkin said both patients are still recovering.
