JOHANNESBURG - An alleged hijacker has been arrested in Rivonia, north of Johannesburg on Friday morning.

Metro police's Wayne Minaar said officers responded to reports of a man who was driving recklessly on the N1 highway.

Minaar said officers gave chase to the vehicle.

The hijacker knocked down a female cyclist and crashed into three other cars before coming to a stop.

Minaar said it emerged upon arrest that the vehicle was hijacked a short while ago.

"It was discovered that the suspect had just hijacked the car about three blocks away."

The 30-year-old man has been taken to the Sandton police station where he will be charged with hijacking and reckless driving.
