JOHANNESBURG - President Jacob Zuma has told Parliament he made a mistake about the cost of the deployment of troops to the Central African Republic (CAR).

Zuma initially said to send troops to the CAR would cost R65 million, but now said the cost would be around R1.3 billion.

The President decided to authorise 400 troops to go to the country.

After Democratic Alliance Shadow Minister of Defence David Maynier questioned the amount, Zuma sent a new letter saying the actual cost was R1.26 billion.

Maynier said Zuma did not make mention of how the mistake was made.

"The President provided no reason for the mistake and provided no apology, but we do welcome the fact that he has now clarified the issue."

The Department of Defence this week said it could not comment.

The insurgency of rebels is gaining significant ground in the CAR.
