CAPE TOWN/JOHANNESBURG - Two men accused of raping and murdering teenager Anene Booysen will appear in the Bredasdorp Magistrates Court on Monday.

The 17-year-old was raped, mutilated and left for dead on 2 February, allegedly by a group of men, one of whom she identified before she died in hospital.

Three men, who are in their early 20s, were arrested in connection with the crimes, but the National Prosecuting Authority said only two accused will appear in court.

Spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said their aim is to have all three men appear in the dock at the same time, so there is only one trial if the case goes that far.

He said today's proceedings will be postponed to Tuesday, when the first suspect is due back in court.

Meanwhile, activist group Sonke Gender Justice has challenged President Jacob Zuma and his government to invest more money towards initiatives aimed at fighting women and child abuse.

The group on Sunday said the President's condemnation of the rape and murder of Booysen was not enough in the battle to make South Africa safe for women.

Zuma released a statement last week saying the attack of the 17-year-old was "cruel and inhumane".

But spokesperson for the Sonke Gender Justice group, Mbuyiselo Botha, said the President should set up a fund that will assist organisations working with rape survivors.

"Let this government put its money where its mouth is."

The rape and mutilation of the 17-year-old sparked wide outrage around the country, but seems to not have encouraged enough action against rape, a crime that happens on average every four minutes in South Africa.

Booysen was laid to rest on Saturday, in Bredasdorp.

But as the country tries to overcome Booysen's rape, two similar incidents have been reported.

The Star reported on Monday that 19-year-old Ge- Audrey Green's body was found in a neighbour's home in Kraaifontein on Saturday.

Her badly decomposed body was found in a drawer underneath a bed.

One suspect has since been arrested in connection with her rape and murder.

Meanwhile, Ofentse Mogale (11) was buried on Saturday, after her body was discovered in a shallow grave in a shack just outside Brits in the North West.
