CARLETONVILLE - Harmony Gold on Friday said it expected to reopen its Kusasalethu mine in Carletonville soon.

Workers at the mine were asked to go home in December last year after they embarked on violent protests over wages.

Mine management decided to temporarily shut down the operation while negotiations with unions continued in a bid to resolve the impasse.

The company had also expressed fears that resuming operations at Kusasalethu would not be safe and not economically viable.

Harmony Gold spokesperson Marian van der Walt said, "We've made good progress in our discussions but we have not reached an agreement.

"The draft agreement which contains the document that says the mine could be open was also discussed."
