Abalone worth R10m seized
A man has been arrested after he was caught with 68 bags of abalone in the Northern Cape.
CAPE TOWN - Northern Cape Police seized abalone worth R10 million near De Aar on Tuesday.
Police stopped a suspicious-looking vehicle during a patrol and discovered refuse bags filled with frozen perlemoen.
The vehicle was travelling to Colesberg.
A 31-year-old man was arrested and charged with the illegal possession of abalone.
Police spokesperson Olebogeng Tawana said, "The police arrested a man after he was caught with 68 bags of abalone in his bakkie."
In 2012, the Democratic Alliance (DA) called on government to crackdown on abalone poachers.
Abalone is facing extinction due to the acidification of oceans from man-made carbon dioxide, overfishing and poaching.
