Farmworkers to get new minimum wage
The new sectoral determination for farmworkers is expected to be announced on Monday.
CAPE TOWN - Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant is set to announce the much-anticipated new sectoral determination for farmworkers on Monday.
Labourers in several Western Cape towns went on strike for about two weeks in January, demanding a basic wage of R150 a day.
They also protested in November last year.
When the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) called off the violent mass action last month, it said there were indications the minimum daily wage would increase to more than R100.
Spokesperson for the department, Musa Zondi, said a lot of work had gone into determining the new wage for workers.
He said public hearings into the matter and the work of the Employment Conditions Commission, "looked at the bigger picture and made a recommendation to the minister".
