Lodge manager rescues flood victims
A Mozambican lodge manager says God guided him when he rescued 40 stranded people.
CAPE TOWN - A Mozambican lodge manager has been hailed as a local hero after he rescued about 40 people who were caught in floods last week.
The floods started last Wednesday and have left tens of thousands of people without homes and food.
Salomão Baloie says when he reached a group of stranded people at around midnight, several children were holding onto the tops of trees, while a pregnant woman cried frantically for him to save her life.
"The road was very dangerous, but I managed to get to them because God was with me."
The pregnant woman gave birth shortly after he had taken her to a place of safety.
At least 150,000 people have been displaced by the floods.
