FNB ad investigation unnecessary
Investigating the controversial FNB advert may not be necessary now that it’s been taken off YouTube.
JOHANNESBURG - The Advertising Standards Authority said on Thursday it may not even initiate an investigation into the First National Bank (FNB) advert that left the ruling party's teeth on edge.
The African National Congress (ANC) and its branches slammed the commercial, which features videos of children at Naledi Secondary School in Soweto reading out their hopes for South Africa.
While the authority received one public complaint, nothing has yet been received from the ANC.
The authority's Leon Grobler said considering the advert has already been pulled off YouTube, there may be no reason to start an investigation.
"If the advert has already been taken off there's really no need for concern anymore. At the very least, if we were to get a complaint, the question becomes: what point do we investigate from?"
He said that they are waiting for FNB to provide a copy of the commercial for the authority to examine.
