CPT school disallows Islamic headwear

Two children have been out of school because their Islamic headwear is not allowed.

Two Kraaifontein children have not been at school for a week because their Islamic headwear is not allowed.

CAPE TOWN - A Cape Town mother said on Wednesday her two children have been out of school for a week because of a debacle around them not being allowed to wear Islamic headwear during class.

Nabila Dramat said her children, who are in grade 11 and 9, were kicked out of a Kraafontein school for wearing an Islamic headscarf and fez last week.

Dramat said she will be meeting with school officials on Thursday for a third time.

"The principal told us they cannot accept it in the classrooms. So my husband and are still pleading with them."

The Western Cape Education Department's Paddy Atwell said the incident is unacceptable.
