JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng Department of Health on Monday said it would confirm later this week if the death of a newborn baby at Kalafong Hospital, outside Pretoria, was due to negligence.

It has been reported the baby's mother, Janine Meiring, was taken to the hospital on Christmas Eve, and despite being in heavy labour, doctors told her the baby was not due anytime soon.

Meiring said the baby slid out of her minutes later, hitting the floor, and that the doctor merely asked her to pick him up.

The newborn later died from his injuries.

The department's spokesperson, Simon Zwane, said they were treating the matter with urgency.

"No one should get away with this kind of treatment towards any patient. No patient deserves this kind of thing."
