ZAMDELA - Cooperate Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Richard Baloyi on Tuesday announced his decision to stop the merger of the Sasolburg and Parys municipalities.

He said he decided to stop the merger due to public unhappiness with the entire process.

The minister asked community leaders to inform residents of his decision.

The controversial plan sparked three days of violent protests in the Zamdela informal settlement near Sasolburg.

Residents took to the streets on Sunday, burning tyres and looting shops.

Several people were injured in clashes, including three police officers and at least two journalists.

Baloyi said he decided against the merger so that the violence can come to an end.

He has called for more public consultation in terms of municipal borders and their restructuring.
