‘Drastic steps needed to end gang violence’
The Nyanga CPF wants drastic action taken to stop gang violence in the area.
CAPE TOWN - The Community Policing Forum (CPF) in Nyanga on Monday said something drastic needs to be done to curb the spate of gang violence by youth in the area.
At least five teenagers were killed in violence between the "Vatos" and the "Vuras" gangs since the start of 2013.
The gangs are made up of teenage boys, who are mostly school dropouts.
Nyanga CPF Secretary Martin Makasi said the violence has escalated over the past few weeks.
He said the gangs are terrorising local community members.
"What needs to happen is for us to start a conflict management programme that will involve both the gangs and the parents [of the gang members]"
Makasi said he also met with local school principals to try and speak to them about the issue of school dropouts.
