CARLETONVILLE - ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe said instability in the mining sector calls for workers to be united.

He also said that unprotected strikes that have recently gripped the country are a symptom of weak trade unions.

Mantashe was speaking at a lecture by the National Union of Mineworkers in Carletonville.

He said there should be continuity in union leadership.

Meanwhile the ANC leader has called on the youth of the country to inform themselves about the history of the country's mining industry, if they want to become future union leaders.

"All we are saying about history is that younger people must know that there is this journey that was travelled and we are here now."

He said all that was expected of the youth is to take that historical process to a higher level.
