Amplats workers delay mass meeting
Bad weather has stopped Amplats workers from holding a mass meeting, in Rustenburg.
RUSTENBURG - Bad weather conditions have resulted in the postponement of a mass rally by Anglo American Platinum mine workers.
The meeting was called by the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) after Amplats announced this week that it would restructure its operations.
Should the restructuring go ahead, 14,000 jobs may be lost.
Meanwhile, the move has also sparked outrage from Mineral Resources minister Susan Shabangu, the ANC, as well as various mining unions.
However, the platinum producer has now agreed to hold talks with the unions.
Godfrey Lindani who represents the workers said miners were confused.
"Last year when we got back to work, we were told that early January there would be early negotiations for our R15,070."
Lindani also said all of a sudden, there were some new things that had come up, as if to confuse the Amplats workers.
