Two cops wounded in Kempton Park shootout
The police officers were following a taxi when the occupants opened fire.
KEMPTON PARK - Two policemen have been shot and wounded during a shootout in Kempton Park in the East Rand, Johannesburg, this afternoon.
It is understood officers were following a suspicious vehicle through the suburb when a group of eight to 10 men jumped out and opened fire.
Dozens of police officers arrived at the scene, where the violent shootout resulted in the death of one of the suspects.
The gun battle between four police officers and a group of men in a taxi left two of the officers with gunshot wounds in the hand and leg respectively.
But the back-up units, who arrived shortly after the gunfight began, managed to corner a group of suspects in a veld near the road where they tried to flee from their taxi.
One of the suspects turned the gun on himself. Three others were arrested.
Police continued to monitor the area to find the rest of the group.
This comes a day after a policeman was shot and wounded by an armed man in Hillbrow, Johannesburg.
Moments later, two officers dressed in civilian clothes were shot by other officers who thought they were the criminals who had shot the first officer.
One of these two officers died while the other is receiving treatment in hospital.
