Police probe US Embassy employee's murder

Police are probing the death of an employee of the US Embassy who was killed in Sandton.

A US Embassy employee was killed in Johannesburg and police are looking into the circumstances surrounding his death.

ILLOVO - The government of the United States of America said it was awaiting an investigation by police to reveal circumstances around the death of its long standing employee.

41 year old Christopher 'Norm' Bates who worked as an information systems officer was stabbed by a woman in his home, north of Johannesburg on Sunday.

Police said Bates had been seen entering the property with the 29-year-old woman a short while before his death.

The woman is due to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

Embassy Spokesperson Jack Hillmeyer said, "He was an employee for the Department of State for 11 years and previously served in our embassies in Senegal, Kenya and Lesotho."

The police's Lungelo Dlamini said the man was seen by security personnel entering the property in Oxford Gardens with the woman on Saturday night.

Dlamini said the same guards were later alerted to loud screams and upon inspection the woman was found with a bloodied knife and the man's body was lying on the ground.

He said the motive behind the killing is not yet known.
