JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng Health MEC Hope Papo on Friday ordered an investigation into a patient's alleged suicide at the Natalspruit Hospital on the East Rand.

The patient, who was admitted with 50 percent burn wounds in December, allegedly set fire to linen and a mattress in the isolation unit where he was being treated.

The MEC's spokesperson, Simon Zwane, said other patients were not affected.

"This patient had been admitted in December with burn wounds sustained in a shack fire.

"We need to understand whether this incident could have been prevented, and what additional measures need to take place to ensure we prevent similar incidents in the future."
