JOHANNESBURG - Police said a 20-year-old was raped while on her way to the Tshwane University of Technology's Soshanguve Campus.

It is understood four men accosted her during the early hours of Tuesday morning, before allegedly raping and robbing her.

Eyewitness News understands the woman was on her way to the campus to beat the annual long queues.

The police's Mathews Mkwadi said, "The suspects approached the woman before robbing her of her cellphone and then raping her."

The incident did not happen on or near the campus, but several kilometres away.

Meanwhile, the university closed its campuses and stopped all late applications because all its course were now full.

The university said the closure will give management time to asses and process the late 2013 applications.

TUT's Willa de Ruyter said, "Once all the applications have been processed, we will give feedback to the successful candidates. We will also inform them when to come to campus to register."

She said this will not impact on the registration process, which starts next week.
