JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng Education MEC Barbara Creecy on Tuesday said they would be opening four new schools on Wednesday and eight more later in the year to meet the growing demand in the province.

Creecy spoke to media earlier to discuss her department's readiness for the start of the new academic year.

Public schools open on Wednesday morning.

Gauteng was the country's top achieving province in 2012 with the highest matric pass rate.

However, Creecy said they would not be resting on their laurels.

"We have a constitutional duty to ensure that learners who need a place in our province have a place. We will do our very best to ensure that all of our children receive the constitutional entitlement that they have to education."

Creecy said her department was ready for the opening of schools and called on parents and teachers to work together.

The coastal region will open next week.
